As of 9 a.m. today, Kosciusko County’s Watch Level (orange) has been reduced to the Advisory Level  (yellow). Though the Watch Level has been downgraded, the advisory level still warns motorists that travel or activities may be restricted in areas because of hazardous situations and advises that motorist avoid these areas.

According to Kosciusko County Emergency Management Director Ed Rock, roads continue to be covered with hard-packed snow and ice. Rock advises that those traveling should use caution.

As weather begins warming today and tomorrow, road conditions are expected to improve. However, the Indiana Department Of Transportation has noted that due to the subzero temperatures, chemical road salt has been less effective on snowy and icy roads. Snowpack that essentially equals sheets of ice should be expected on all roads. These conditions are not expected to improve until later in the day today, when temperatures are expected to become more favorable for salt and plows.

Motorists are again encouraged to reference the Indiana State Police and INDOT websites for travel conditions and updates. Locally, Sgt. Chad Hill of the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department has noted a flooding of weather related calls causing emergency lines to be tied up. Those with travel related questions are strongly encouraged to reference INDOT and ISP to allow phone lines to remain open for emergencies.
