Eagles Snap Skid Versus Trojans
ELKHART – The road woes for the Triton boys basketball team continued Thursday night.
In the process, Elkhart Christian Academy showed why they belong in the Top 10 among Class 1-A teams.
The host Eagles snapped a long losing streak to the tradition-rich Trojans in posting a 53-41 win at ECA.
Elkhart Christian, which improves to 6-1 with the big win, had lost 11 in a row to Triton. The last time ECA topped the Trojans came in January of 2002.
The Eagles, who were ranked No. 11 in this week’s Associated Press Class 1-A poll and have never cracked the Top 10, prevailed in a game of runs over the No. 9 Trojans.
Triton, boasting a young and relatively inexperienced team after heavy graduation losses from last year’s state runner-up team, drops to 4-4. The Trojans have lost three in a row, all on the road. The losses to New Prairie, Warsaw and ECA are to three foes with a combined record of 17-4.
The game was one of back-and-forth runs. The hosts bolted to an 8-0 lead to lead 17-9 after the opening quarter of play. The Eagles were up 22-11 before Triton scored the final 13 points of the opening half to lead 24-22 at intermission.
Elkhart Christian, sparked by the play of Drew Overmyer, used an 8-0 run to open the second half to take the lead for good. The Trojans got within 44-41 late in the game before the hosts scored the final nine points of the contest.
The Eagles have now won four in a row since their lone loss, an 86-79 setback in overtime at Prairie Heights. ECA owns wins over Class 4-A programs Elkhart Memorial and Mishawaka already this season.
Skyler Reichert came off the bench to lead Triton with 13 points.
Tanner Shepherd had 11 points and seven rebounds for the Trojans. Mason Yeo scored seven for Triton.
Cory Waycaster scored a game-high 16 points, 13 in the second half, to pace Elkhart Christian. Kenny Bearss had 10 points and seven rebounds, Overmyer nine points and Tanner Watson eight points, six rebounds and five assists.
Senior Ryan Kupferschmid, who entered play Thursday night with 982 career points for the Eagles, netted five points. The standout did have a game-high nine rebounds for the winners.
Triton hit 6-26 from 3-point range and 9-18 free throws in the contest. ECA was 9-21 from distance and just 8-21 from the line.
Triton won the junior varsity game 28-23. Landon Kauffman led the Trojans with 12 points.
Triton plays at Northern State Conference foe Glenn and ECA hosts Lakeland Christian Academy (varsity only at 6 p.m.) on Saturday, Jan. 11.
