Wawasee Sports Wrap – Jan. 30
Adams Trumps Short-handed Wawasee
South Bend Adams made the most of the night in Syracuse, outlasting Wawasee 49-39 in girls hoops in a make-up game from early December.
Wawasee, dealing with team suspensions, played just six players Thursday night but hung with a South Bend Adams team that had 12 wins coming into the night. Leading just 31-27 heading into the fourth quarter, Adams had Taloni Reese score 14 of her team-high 20 points to help the Lady Eagles to its 13th win of the season. Jenna Thomas added 14 points in the win.
Kylee Rostochak led all scorers with 24 points, but only hit one field goal in the second half. Elizabeth Jackson added seven points for the Lady Warriors, which fall to 2-13 on the season.
The Adams JV beat Wawasee 34-18 in the night’s first contest.
Wawasee goes to work again Saturday at Concord.
Concord Frosh Frustrate Warriors
A festival of turnovers from Wawasee, totaling 23 on the night, aided Concord in a 45-31 victory in boys freshman basketball at Concord.
Tim Conley led Wawasee (6-7) with 14 points.
The Warriors will play again Monday night at NorthWood.
Allen Stars For Wawasee Gymnastics
Wawasee’s Emily Allen had a huge night, taking first place in two events as well as all-around. Her team, however, finished second to Lakeland in the dual, 97.2-93.9, in Lagrange.
Allen grabbed first on bars (8.25) and floor (9.15) while placing second on beam (8.0) and vault (8.6). Her score of 34.00 in all-around led all competitors.
Lakeland had the duo of Caitlin Yoder and Sam Gieseking do the heavy lifting. Yoder vaulted to a top score with an 8.85 and then flipped the beam for an 8.2 honors score. The two teammates tied for second with a bars score of 8.05 and Gieseking just missed Allen on the floor with her 9.05 score.
Wawasee’s Molly Smith chipped in an 8.4 third-place vault score and an all-around tally of 30.9, which landed behind Lakeland’s Yoder and Gieseking. The Lady Warriors performed without varsity ace Taylor Busse, sidelined with a sprained ankle.
In JV events, Wawasee’s Haleigh Smarr led the way with a first-place line of 7.7 on vault and 7.4 on floor. Wawasee edged Lakeland in team scoring 50.35-49.0.
Wawasee (2-2) will return home Monday with a meet against East Noble.
