Trojans Earn Spot In Sectional Final
BOURBON – The Triton girls basketball team earned the right to play one more time on their home court Friday night.
The host Trojans took care of Argos 70-54 in a Class 1-A sectional semifinal game.
Triton (15-6) will meet No. 1 Oregon-Davis (18-2) at 7:30 p.m. Saturday for the sectional championship. The two-time defending sectional champion Bobcats beat the Trojans 75-35 at OD on Jan. 30.
The Trojans, whose last sectional title came in 2011, used big second and third quarters Friday night to top the Dragons for the second time this season. Argos led 15-14 after the opening period before the hosts outscored them 17-7 in the second stanza and 23-14 in the third quarter to pull away.
The 1-2 punch of Kylie Mason and Krystal Sellers were outstanding for Triton. Mason hit 10-16 shots in scoring a game-high 25 points. Sellers hit 9-10 free throws in netting 20 points.
Jaela Meister had eight points and seven rebounds for coach Adam Heckaman’s squad. Mallorie Jennings finished with seven points for Triton, which beat Argos 53-25 during the regular season.
Triton, which has won four in a row, shot 18-42 overall from the field and 7-11 on treys. The hosts were an outstanding 27-32 from the free throw line in the win.
Courtney Dunlap led Argos with 15 points. Amanda Middleton scored 14 and Valerie Rospopo 13 for the Dragons, who finish at 10-9.
Oregon-Davis shook off a slow start to handle No. 10 Culver easily 67-41 in Friday night’s other semifinal contest.
The Bobcats led just 9-8 after the opening period before outscoring the Cavaliers 23-6 in the second quarter.
Alicia McIntosh led the Bobcats with 19 points. Jessica Averone had 18, while Ashley Campbell and Hailey Collings each added 10. OD shot 23-47 from the field overall, including 11-25 on 3-pointers. The winners were also 10-10 from the line.
Kayla Shaffer netted 12 points to lead Culver, which finishes at 14-5. Donna Zehner had 11 points and Angela Lewellen 10. Culver shot 16-45 from the field, including 3-13 from distance, and 6-12 from the line.
OD has won its last six games. Coach Terry Minix team’s two losses this season were to South Bend Washington and Benet Academy from Illinois.
