Geist, Penn End Concord Run
MICHIGAN CITY – Jordan Geist was just too much for Concord to handle Saturday.
The Penn guard poured in 30 points to pace the No. 6 Kingsmen past the Minutemen 66-51 in a semifinal game of the Class 4-A Michigan City Regional.
Penn (23-1) advanced to play Lake Central (20-3) for the regional championship Saturday night. Lake Central topped LaPorte in the first semifinal Saturday.
Lake Central edged Penn 57-55 in the regional title tilt Saturday night.
The Kingsmen, who beat Concord 66-48 during the regular season, controlled the contest from start to finish. Penn, coached by former Warsaw coach Al Rhodes, led 16-8 after the opening period and 30-20 at intermission.
Geist, the son of former Elkhart Memorial girls basketball coach Scott Geist, hit 12-17 shots from the field. The junior guard scored 20 of his points in the second half.
Taylor Brooks had nine points and seven rebounds for Penn.
Filip Serwatka led Concord with 18 points and nine rebounds. Ramon Johnson had 17 points and Adam Glanders nine points and six rebounds for the Minutemen.
Concord, which upset Northridge en route to winning the Elkhart Sectional title, was without Brett Austin. The guard was out after suffering a sprained ankle in practice earlier in the week.
Penn shot 25-49 overall from the field, including 4-11 on 3-pointers. The Kingsmen were 12-18 from the free throw line.
Concord shot 19-41 from the field overall, including just 1-8 from distance. The Minutemen were 12-16 from the line.
Concord finishes its season at 15-9.
