Westview Looks For Semistate Title
The Westview boys basketball team will represent the area on Saturday.
The Warriors will face No. 7 Cass in the Northern Semistate at Huntington North High School. Tip-off of the Class 2-A contest is set for 4 p.m.
Westview advanced to the semi state in thrilling fashion last Saturday. The Warriors rallied from a 12-point deficit in the fourth quarter to defeat Hammond Noll 75-64 in double overtime and then beat Winamac 69-53 to win the North Judson Regional title.
Cass edged past Wapahani 63-62 and then topped Tipton 55-47 to claim the Lapel Regional championship last Saturday.
Wesview takes a 22-4 mark into the semi state. The Warriors, who average 60.4 ppg. and allow 48.9 ppg., have lost to Northridge, NorthWood, West Noble and Prairie Heights this season.
The Warriors are led by the trio of Jordyn Bontrager, Chandler Aspy and Jamar Weaver. Senior Bontrager averages 17.2 points and 5.3 rebounds per game and is 43-106 on 3-pointers. Junior Aspy averages 15.7 ppg., while senior Weaver is at 9.5 ppg. and has hit 45-104 treys.
Westview has won its last 11 games. The Warriors are in the semi state for the first time since 2008. The program won back-to-back Class 2-A semi state and state championships in 1999 and 2000.
Coach Rob Yoder is 188-80 in his 11th season in Topeka.
Cass, which won a state championship in 2003, heads into the semi state with a 20-game winning streak. The Kings, who lost to Logansport and Hamilton Heights, average 73.8 ppg. and allow 54.7 ppg.
The Kings are led by seniors Austin Keisling (18.4) and Blake Hadley (14.9) and sophomore Ryan Bixler (13.3).
Cass was just 10-11 last season, its fifth straight losing season. Cass coach Jon Kitchel, now in his third season, played at Cass and also at Purdue. He is the cousin of former IU star Ted Kitchel.
The Westview-Cass winner advances to play in the Class 2-A state championship game March 29. The contest will tip-off at approximately 12:45 p.m. in Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
The South Semistate game on Saturday features Park Tudor (22-4) versus Clarksville (23-2) at Seymour.
