Whitko Nine Win Opener
NEW HAVEN – Ethan Nicodemus led the way to a season-opening win for the Whitko baseball team Monday.
Nicodemus collected the pitching win as the Wildcats topped host New Haven 5-3.
Nicodemus also went 2-4 at the plate with a pair of doubles, two runs scored and an RBI in the win.
Tanner Gaff pitched the final three innings to notch the save for the Wildcats. He allowed just one hit, while striking out three.
“Tonight was a great start to our season,” said Whitko coach Erik Hisner. “The kids played very well, especially considering this was the first time we had the chance to be outside on a baseball field.”
“We only had two errors (one throwing on a pickoff attempt and one catching on a pickoff attempt), so our defense played clean baseball.
“Offensively, we only had five hits, but we made them count. The kids did a great job of putting the ball in play after the first time through the order.”
Starting pitcher Ethan Nicodemus and relief pitcher Tanner Gaff both threw the ball well. They both pounded the strike zone and made some big pitches when they had to.”
Whitko (1-0) will play a doubleheader at Marion Saturday starting at 11 a.m.
