Warsaw Track Team Wins Pair
WARSAW – The Warsaw girls track team opened its season in outstanding fashion Monday night.
The highly-touted and talented Tigers finally got outside after being delayed by poor weather the last week.
Warsaw made the most of the opportunity on a warm and windy night by topping Penn and South Bend Washington at the Tiger Athletic Complex at WCHS.
The hosts, led by double individual winners Jackie Ferguson and Tennie Worrell, defeated Penn 85-47 and whipped Washington 124-8 in the non-conference triangular.
Warsaw won 11 events on the night and had a plethora of personal-best efforts in the two wins.
Senior Ferguson won both hurdles races, taking first in the 100 in a top time of 17.42 and leading the field in the 300 in 48.43.
Junior Worrell also had a strong night for the Tigers, winning the high jump at 4-10 and claiming top honors in the 400 with a time of 1:01.75.
Warsaw also got individual wins from standout senior sprinter Ann Harvuot in the 100 meter dash (13.30) and star senior Claire Hickerson in the pole vault (9-0).
Also claiming firsts for coach Scott Erba’s team were freshmen Allison Miller in the 3,200 (11:31.91) and Audrey Rich in the 200 (27.33).
The hosts also won all three relay races. The 4 X 100 team of Mariah Harter, Sam Alexander, Harvuout and Rich took top honors in a time of 50.85. The foursome of Ferguson, Worrell, Nicole Eckert and Haley Peterson won the 4 X 400 relay race in 4:14.54. The team of Miller, Madeline Hooks, Anna Craig and Aletheia Burritt won the 4 X 800 race in 10:10.05.
The Tigers had their first two outdoor meets postponed by the weather.
Warsaw is off until opening defense of its Northern Lakes Conference title on April 15 versus NorthWood and Concord at NorthWood.
