Irish, Huskies Set For Showdown
The Pursuit of Perfection will end in historic fashion Tuesday night.
Unbeatens Notre Dame and UConn will square off for the women’s basketball national championship.
The No. 2 Irish and the top-ranked Huskies each advanced with semifinal wins Sunday night in the NCAA Tournament Final Four in Nashville.
The clash of rivals will mark the first time in history that two undefeated teams have met for the NCAA Tournament title.
The Irish, who lost 83-65 to UConn in the Final Four a year ago, rolled past No. 11 Maryland Sunday night. The defending national champion Huskies shook off a slow start to top Stanford 75-56.
Notre Dame star Kayla McBride led the way in the rout over the Terrapins. The All-American guard scored 19 of her game-high 28 points in the opening half by hitting 8-12 shots. McBride sparked a 10-0 run that gave the Irish control after leading just 23-21 in the opening half.
The Irish, despite playing without 6-3 senior center Natalie Achonwa, dominated Maryland on the glass. Notre Dame, which beat Maryland 87-83 in their closest game of the season, out rebounded the Terps 23-9 in the first half.
Notre Dame built a 48-31 halftime lead and cruised to the win. The Irish out rebounded Maryland 50-21 overall, including 19-4 in offensive rebounds.
Sophomore Jewell Loyd had 16 points and nine rebounds for the Irish. Markisha Wright came off the bench with a season-high 12 points and nine rebounds in the post and freshman Taya Reimer, who started in place of the injured Achonwa, had nine points and five rebounds.
Achonwa suffered a torn ACL in her left knee last Monday during a win over Baylor in the regional title game at Notre Dame.
Maryland star senior Alyssa Thomas, who scored 29 points versus the Irish back in January, had just 14 points.
UConn pulled away in the second half to beat Stanford in the second semifinal Sunday night. The Huskies led just 28-24 at halftime. Sophomore Breanna Stewart had 18 points as all five starters scored in double figures for UConn.
UConn and Notre Dame, former rivals in the Big East before the Irish joined the ACC this year, have met 41 times. The Huskies lead the series 30-11, but Notre Dame has won seven of the last nine meetings.
UConn is seeking a record ninth national championship Tuesday night. Notre Dame won the national title in 2001.
The title tilt Tuesday night begins at 8:30 p.m. and will be broadcast by ESPN.
