Lady Lancers Split With Taylor [VIDEO]
WINONA LAKE – Grace’s softball team picked up its biggest win of the season on Tuesday, splitting with Crossroads League-leading Taylor at Miller Field.
The Lady Lancers (12-20; 8-8 CL) lost a narrow 3-1 contest in the opener before Hannah Adams produced the game-winning hit in a 2-1 victory in the second game.
Grace had its share of opportunities in the first game, but the Lady Lancers stranded eight runners on base. Taylor scored one run in the second and two more in the third for its only tallies of the game. Grace’s run came in the third inning when Samantha Johnson walked, Brooke Shell doubled, and Olivia Winget hit a ground ball to bring in Johnson.
The Lady Lancers had runners in scoring position in the fifth and sixth innings, but both situations came up fruitless.
Amanda Bowman and Winget combined on the pitching effort for Grace with Winget tossing the final five innings.
In the second game, Grace claimed its first lead of the afternoon in the opening inning. Brooke Shell led off the game with a single, and, after being sacrificed to second base, she scored on a single from Winget.
On the mound for Grace, Hannah Adams had Taylor’s high-scoring bats tied in knots for most of the second game. She limited the Trojans to three hits in 5.1 innings of work – including zero hits through the first four innings.
The Trojans finally got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning, converting a squeeze bunt to tie the game.
But Grace retaliated in the bottom of the fifth to score the game-winning run. Johnson and Shell singled to start the inning, and Adams hit a two-out single to left field to bring Shell in to score.
Alex Shipley came in to throw the final 1.2 innings for the Lady Lancers, picking up the save by allowing just one hit down the stretch.
Shell was 2-for-3 for Grace, scoring both of the team’s runs. Johnson finished 2-for-2 for the Lady Lancers as well.
Grace ends the week with a pair of home doubleheaders. The Lady Lancers host St. Francis on Friday at 3 p.m. and host Goshen on Saturday at 1 p.m.
