Pierceton Elementary Students Learn Fire Safety
Students at Pierceton Elementary were educated on fire safety this week by Captain Dave Meadows of the Fort Wayne Fire Department.
He enlightened students on ways of preventing fires, what to do if you have a fire, where to call if you need assistance in an emergency and how important it is to know your physical address. He also let them know that it is important to know what to do in case of a fire. Your family should practice an escape route and have a meeting place once you are outside. Students were asked to remind parents to check their smoke detectors to make sure they are working properly.
Captain Meadows also explained the equipment that firemen use. The children learned that the name is placed at the bottom of the jacket because when the firemen strap the air tank on their back the name would be covered if not placed at the bottom. They are not always able to talk at the scene so this way the name can be seen. On Captain Meadows jacket was a yellow box the students were curious about. They learned that if a fireman goes down and is no longer moving the box begins a beeping noise that alerts other firefighters that one of them needs help.
