Tigers Place Seventh In Golf Opener
PERU – The Warsaw boys golf team made its season debut in a field loaded with talented teams Saturday.
The No. 8 Tigers notched a seventh-place finish in the Hall of Fame Invitational played at the Rock Hollow Golf Course.
The field featured six ranked teams, including top-ranked Columbus North, who was state runner-up in 2013.
Jake Brown led No. 9 Carmel to the team title by earning medalist honors with a round of 72. The Greyhounds shot 307 as a team, topping runner-up Columbus North, which shot a 324.
Coach Ben Barkey’s Tigers came in at 337, good for seventh place among the 18 teams.
Junior Jonny Hollar led the way for Warsaw with a round of 81.
Ryan Cultice finished with an 83 and Will Petro an 86 for the Tigers. Brandon Eckert shot 87 and Josh Ahlersmeyer 88.
Brownsburg was third in the final team standings with a 329. Columbia City was fourth with a 330, followed by No. 7 Zionsville (333), No. 10 Floyd Central (335), Warsaw (337), No. 15 Bloomington South (339), Crown Point (339), Avon (345), Mooresville (345), Northridge (345), Culver Academies (347), Peru (351), Maconaquah (358), Rising Sun (361), Rochester (362) and Bloomington North (69).
Cameron Smith of Peru was second among individuals with a 72. Michael VanDeventer of Columbus North was third with a 74, Tyler Green of Columbia City fourth with a 75 and Adam Wood of Zionsville, Jack Sparrow of Floyd Central and Kevin Stone of Carmel tied for fifth as each shot a 77.
Wood was the individual state champion in 2013.
Warsaw returns to action Saturday in the Spring Preview at The Legends in Franklin.
