Mom Abducts Daughter, Arrested After Pursuit
A Syracuse woman well-known to local law enforcement has found herself in trouble in Michigan where she led state troopers on a high speed chase after abducting her young daughter.
Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Chad Hill said Aubrey Ann Coy, 34, 4865 E. 1000 N.,
Syracuse was having a supervised visit Sunday with her 5-year-old daughter when she kidnapped the child. Coy’s mother was to be supervising the visit when her daughter somehow managed to escape.
The woman immediately called KCSD to report the incident. KCSD Deputy Chris Anderson checked the GPS on a cellphone in Coy’s possession and located it in the area of U.S. 12 and Blue School Road in St. Joseph County, Mich. Michigan State Police were then notified.
According to Sgt. Hill, a Michigan State Trooper located Coy’s vehicle in Mottville Township at about 5:30 p.m. Sunday. From information provided by MSP, Hill said a trooper attempted to remove the keys from Coy’s vehicle when he found her and noticed the 5-year-old girl was not in a car seat. Coy managed to get away from the officer and sped off.
Troopers, St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department deputies and officers from the White Pigeon Police Department were all involved in the chase, during which Coy removed the child’s seat belt and put her on her lap. MSP said the chase reached speeds of approximately 75 mph and ended only after one of the tires on Coy’s vehicle came off of the rim and two tires were flattened by stop sticks.
When Coy’s vehicle came to a stop, she attempted to flee on foot with the girl. Coy was taken into custody along U.S. 131 at North River Road just outside of Constantine, Mich.
Coy is being held at the St. Joseph County Jail on charges of felony fleeing and eluding, felony possession of narcotics, felony resisting and obstruction, misdemeanor operating under the influence and misdemeanor child endangerment.
Hill said Coy is expected to face more charges locally which may include interfering with child custody and/or kidnapping. The information has been turned over to the Kosciusko County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
Coy has a substantial history of crimes locally with felony charges including theft, forgery, fraud, resisting law enforcement, possession of methamphetamine, leaving the scene of an accident, operating while intoxicated and possession of a controlled substance. She has also faced misdemeanor charges of trespassing, intimidation and operating while intoxicated.
