Talented Tigers Take Track Title
GOSHEN – Matt Thacker spent most of Saturday crunching the numbers during the Goshen Relays.
His Warsaw boys track team spent most of Saturday crunching the competition.
The Tigers, led by their stellar senior class, made history in a big way Saturday.
Warsaw, on a sun-drenched day, shone the brightest in claiming the Class A championship in the 72nd running of the prestigious event held at Foreman Field.
The Tigers won the championship outright for the first time in program history by scoring 100 points. Penn, which edged Warsaw 84-83 a year ago for the team title, was second with 86 points.
Warsaw defeated Penn head-to-head by an 88-43 count back on April 1. The Tigers edged the Kingsmen 76-73 to win the Kokomo Regional championship in 2013.
“It’s special to win the championship,” said coach Thacker, whose team tied Fort Wayne Carroll for the title in 2012. “Our guys talked about winning this all week. They really wanted to come here and do well today.
“They really stepped up to the occasion today. Their performances were fantastic. They were dialed in. I’m happy with the guys and I’m happy to have some good weather.”
No one was more dialed in than the dynamic duo of Seth Fouts and Gabe Furnivall.
The pair of seniors were something special on this day.
Fouts broke the school record and the Goshen Relays standard in Class A with his final throw in the shot put. The Tiger big man, who was fifth at the State Finals in 2013, uncorked an effort of 60-7. That eclipsed the old school standard of 60-3 set by Randy Heisler and also topped the previous relays mark of 60-1 set by Jason Brown of South Bend Clay in 2003.
Fouts’ top effort Saturday was also the second best throw in the state so far this season.
Fouts, who will compete in track and field at the University of Kentucky next year, took his outstanding effort in stride.
“My goal today was to get the record, but it just means that I have to get better,” Fouts said. “I’m happy with this, but not content. I just need to focus on what I need to do and compete with myself.
My goal is first for the team to win a state championship. I want that so bad. I also want to win a state championship in shot. I just love it. It’s so fun competing and I think I have a throw of 65 in me.”
Furnivall, who like Fouts was a standout on the football field in the fall, showcased his superior skills package. He ran a leg on three winning relay teams on the day.
“Seth’s record today was a highlight,” said Thacker, who also serves as an assistant football coach for the Tigers. “He’s such a good kid. He’s overcome some adversity and it’s exciting to see him doing this. I’m really proud of him.
“What can I say about Gabe? He had a phenomenal day. He can do anything for us. We had been dying for decent weather for our 4 X 100 team to run and they went after it today.”
Furnivall teamed with fellow seniors Tanner Balazs, Tristan McClone and Mike Miller to win the 4 X 100 relay in 43.26. He teamed with Ryan Goon, Chad Goon and Miller to win the 4 X 200 in 1:32.74. He combined with the Goon brothers and Landon Perry to win the 4 X 400 in 3:24.90.
Miller, who has been a huge addition to the team this year after playing baseball a year ago, was second in the 100 in 11.29.
The Tigers were also second in the 4 X 800 with the team of Ellis Coon, Ismael Calderon, Daniel Messenger and Tyler Houvener in 8:12.80. The team of Calderon, Messenger, Houvener and Riley Rhoades placed second in the Distance Medley Relay with a time of 11:02.83.
Coon, who missed almost all of his junior track season due to a foot injury, did not run any of his individual events. The Tulsa recruit, who placed third at the cross country state finals in October, was held out for “precautionary” reasons according to Thacker.
Senior Stephen Kolbe was third in the high jump with a top jump of 6-4. Fouts was third in the discus with a throw of 140-9. The Sprint Medley Relay team of Balazs, Rhoades, Ross Armey and Storm Stapleton was third in a time of 1:40.03.
The Tigers also got fourth-place finishes from McClone in the 100 (11.76) and Andrew Scheidt in the discus (138-11). Nick Bergen was sixth in the 1,600 (4:35.83) and Rashaan Jackson sixth in the long jump (20-8.5) and Jake Fayed was seventh in the pole vault (11-6).
“Wer just have more depth, especially in our sprints this year,” Thacker said. “We had two guys score in the 100 and two guys in the discus and Rashaan in the long jump.”
Warsaw, which is undefeated on the season, returns to action Thursday. The Tigers, who are 4-0 in the Northern Lakes Conference, will compete at Wawasee versus the host Warriors and Concord in a league triangular.
Warsaw will then host its own Max Truex Invitational on Friday, May 2.
