Unbeaten Memorial Tames Tigers
ELKHART – The Warsaw girls tennis team was not able to take the wind out of the sails of Elkhart Memorial Tuesday.
On a blustery day, two teams going in opposite directions met up in a Northern Lakes Conference tussle.
The host Crimson Chargers, who were not distracted at all by a small fire inside the high school which brought a slew of fire trucks on to the scene, rolled to a 5-0 league win over the Tigers.
Memorial improves to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in NLC action. Warsaw drops to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in league play.
Memorial, which won 5-0 over Westview on Monday, now has NLC wins over NorthWood, Concord and Warsaw. The Tigers, who lost 5-0 at Fort Wayne Carroll on Monday, have lost league matches to Plymouth and Northridge.
The Tigers, who have now lost five in a row since a season-opening win over Columbia City, turned in their best efforts at doubles Tuesday.
The Warsaw No. 2 doubles duo of Abbi Baum and Athena Schlitt lost in three sets. The Memorial tandem of Hannah Dillman and Mady Robison won 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.
The No. 1 doubles match saw Haley Stouder and Taelor Gross team up for a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) victory over Warsaw seniors Sarah Boyle and Jacqueline Sasso.
Standout Krystal Grubb led the way at singles for the Crimson Chargers. Grubb defeated Rachel Alexander 6-4, 6-1.
Corinn Whittaker and Taylor Freedline posted dominating wins at the other two singles spots for Memorial. Whittaker topped Anna Hall 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 and Freedline beat Camille Kerlin 6-0. 6-1 at No. 3.
Warsaw did win the junior varsity match by a 6-1 final.
Winning for the JV Tigers were Mattie Doran, Sydney Hartman and Shelby Roberts in singles play. Also winning were the doubles teams of Rosie Fleming and Jenn Katris, Danielle Straits and Sydney Peugh and Bonnie Wong and Abby Smith.
Warsaw will host Wawasee Thursday in another NLC match. Memorial hosts Mishawaka Wednesday and Plymouth Thursday.
