Warsaw Tennis Tops Warriors
WARSAW – A change of scenery provided just the right tonic for the Warsaw girls tennis team Thursday.
The host Tigers had to move indoors due to the weather to the Warsaw Racquet Club to face conference and county rival Wawasee.
Warsaw, sparked by three dominating wins, collected a much needed win in the Northern Lakes Conference match.
The Tigers posted a 5-0 win over the Warriors.
Warsaw got big wins from seniors Sarah Boyle and Rachel Alexander in singles action.
Boyle topped junior Jada Antonides 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 and Alexander stopped junior Natalie Fritz 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3.
The Warsaw No. 2 doubles team of Abbi Baum and Athena Schlitt defeated sophomore Addison Ayers and junior Jaclyn Miller also by a 6-0, 6-0 final.
Senior Jacqueline Sasson beat senior Katy Ashpole 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) at No. 1 singles in the closest match of the evening.
The Warsaw No. 1 doubles team of Anna Hall and Camille Kerlin topped freshman Aubrey Schmeltz and sophomore Jazlyn Gehlhausen 6-1, 6-2.
The host Tigers snapped a five-match losing streak to post their first NLC win of the season. Warsaw improves to 2-5 overall and 1-3 in the NLC. Wawasee drops to 1-6 overall and 0-4 in league play.
The two teams could meet again in the Warsaw Sectional.
There was no junior varsity play Thursday due to the match being moved indoors.
Warsaw will host Fort Wayne Concordia Friday. Wawasee plays at West Noble on Monday.
