David F. Longanecker
David F. Longanecker, 70, North Manchester, Ind., passed away at 8:44 p.m. Friday, May 9, 2014, in Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne, Ind.
He was born Sept. 22, 1943, at Youngstown, Ohio, to Elwood J. and Lillian L. (Allison) Longanecker. David graduated from Columbiana (OH) High School and from Manchester College in 1967. On Sept. 10, 1966, he married Gerri L. Herndon. She survives.
At Manchester College he earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology and physical education. He played in numerous semi-pro baseball leagues and was the official timer for Manchester High School cross-country program for many years. For 3 years he taught Junior Achievement at Wabash High School. He was active in promoting organ donation and counseling recipients. He retired from North Central Co-op, Wabash, Ind., in 2001 after 36 years. David was active in Brethren Way of Christ for many years and a member of First Brethren Church, North Manchester.
He is survived by his wife; two sons: J.D. Longanecker, North Manchester; Jacob A. (Sarah) Longanecker, North Manchester; a daughter: Krishna D. Longanecker, Springfield, Mass.; six grandchildren: Andrew Longanecker, Ashlyn L. Longanecker, Carter A. Ferranti, Alevander D. Ferranti, Landon D. Longanecker and Ethan M. Longanecker; three sisters: Bonnie Rogers, Columbiana, Ohio; Arlene Sloan, North Lima, OH and Marilee (David) Bodendorfer, Columbiana, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by one brother: Arlen Longanecker; and four grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, May 16, at McKee Mortuary, 1401 SR 114 W., North Manchester, and from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday, May 17, at First Brethren Church, 407 N. Sycamore, St., North manchester. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 17, at First Brethren Church, 407 N. Sycamore St., North Manchester. Pastor Kurt Stout will officiate.
Memorial contributions may be made to the National Transplant Assistance Fund or the Manchester University Men’s Baseball Team.
