SYRACUSE – The streets of Syracuse were abuzz Saturday morning in efforts to help the children of Wawasee area schools.
The Junior Achievement Stars & Stripes 5K road race was held, beginning at Lakeside Fitness and working its way around Syracuse, passing through Oakwood Park and down Pickwick Drive before returning to the club.
The race as a whole had 143 runners accounted for and around two dozen walkers, which entry fees were given in part to Junior Achievement to support academic growth for children attending Wawasee schools.
Winning the men’s race was Andy Dunithan of Milford with an official time of 20:00. Just behind Andy Dunithan was Jeff Dunithan, whose sprint in the final 50 meters caught Todd McCulloch on the home stretch for runner-up honors at 20:47, one step to the line faster than McCulloch. Both men are from Syracuse. Running with the two men was Syracuse’s Melanie Mickley, who led the women’s runners with a final time of 20:50.
All official times were recorded by the Kosciusko Runner’s Association. There were 24 male and female age group categories for the race. Official results can be found here.
