Wildcats Send Four To Regionals
NEW HAVEN – Whitko will have four athletes alive for next week’s Fort Wayne Northrop Girls Track Regional after advancing from Tuesday night’s New Haven Girls Track Sectional.
Whitko did not have an individual champion, but did have four girls place within the top four places, qualifying for the regional round of the state tournament.
Elaine Warner will compete in two events. The junior placed second in the long jump with a leap of 17-2.5 on her second attempt of the day. Warner then placed fourth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 49.98. Holly Hankenson of Bellmont won the long jump at 17-3.25 and also claimed the 300 hurdles title with a meet record of 45.01.
Freshman Kaitlyn Reed almost won herself a title in the high jump, clearing 5-3 but was bested by the 5-4 effort of Fort Wayne Wayne’s JeBria Green. Whitko had a second jumper take fourth, a 5-0 mark by senior Miranda Terrill, who qualified on jumps over Heritage’s Kiersten Winn.
Senior Dana Hobbs was the fourth participant from Whitko to advance to the regional, sending her discus 101-05 to take third in the competition. South Adams’ Allison Amstutz won the event with a toss of 115-01.
Whitko had three events take sixth place, but nothing in fifth as a potential scratch add for next week. Among the sixth-place finishes were the 4×100 relay at 52.06, Brigit Nemitz in the 1,600-meter run at 5:48.54 and Taylor Zwick in the long jump with a leap of 14-9.25.
Homestead won the team title with 148 points while Whitko placed fifth with 53 points.
Fort Wayne Northrop will host the regional next Tuesday, events beginning at 6 p.m. Feeder sectionals include New Haven, Madison-Grant, Marion and Fort Wayne Northrop.
