Robbins, Gaff Lead Whitko Win
ROCHESTER – Avery Robbins came up clutch when it counted Wednesday night for the Whitko baseball team.
Robbins delivered the game winning hit in the final inning as the Wildcats edged past host Rochester 3-2.
Robbins smacked a two-run single in the top of the seventh frame to lift the Wildcats to the big Three Rivers Conference road win.
Rochester took a 1-0 lead with a run in the opening inning. Whitko tied the game in the fourth frame on an RBI by Ethan Nicodemus. The Zebras regained the lead with a single run in the fifth inning.
Tanner Gaff turned in an outstanding pitching effort for coach Erik Hisner’s squad. He went the distance, only allowing five hits with no walks and six strikeouts.
Cy Holland took the loss for Rochester. He allowed four hits with six walks and 10 strikeouts.
Nicodemus had a hit, an RBI and a run scored for the winners. Gaff also had a hit for the Wildcats.
Whitko improves to 16-9 overall and goes to 4-3 in TRC action. Rochester drops to 14-8 overall and 3-4 in league play.
Whitko hosts Prairie Heights Saturday for a doubleheader at 10 a.m.
