Trojans Feeling Twice As Nice [VIDEO]
BOURBON – It’s a moment in Triton softball history that has never happened before. The Lady Trojans took care of business Tuesday night, blitzing Hamilton 10-0 in a five-inning sectional championship that gave Triton its first back-to-back sectional titles in school history.
Triton started off slow but soon found a lot of rhythm off Hamilton starter Mackenzie Smyth. After scoring a run in the first off a Krystal Sellers single, Triton really got comfortable at the plate. Mallorie Jennings had a key hit in the second, driving in a run while another run came in on a fielding error on the play.
“We just needed to relax at the plate and make contact with the ball,” Sellers said. “The best thing for me to do is relax is make contact with the ball, even if I make an out. Just hit the ball and see where it goes. I did that and so did my teammates, and eventually we started scoring runs.”
In the third, Megan Berger and Hannah Jennings both sat on Smyth pitches and drove in runs, Jennings’ on a two-bagger that landed just inside the left field foul line. With now a 7-0 lead and Mallorie Jennings in the circle, it became pretty academic.
Jennings was dealing Tuesday night, allowing just a single to Maddy Keegan in the fifth and a walk in the second. The stud senior, freshly minted to Manchester University this fall on a softball scholarship, struck out nine, including the side in the fifth.
Smyth was tattooed for 16 hits and three walks and struck out none.
“Once I got through their big hitters, it was a huge confidence boost for me,” Mallorie said, who left the top five Hamilton hitters 0-for-11. “It helped out that I was able to take control in the circle and let the defense behind me pick it up. Everybody seemed to be getting better as the game went on.”
Hannah Jennings, Sellers and Kayla Kreft all had RBI singles in the fifth to put the run-rule into effect, sending Triton to its third sectional in seven years. The Lady Trojans, now 22-6 on the season, match its record win total from a season ago and will await the winner of South Central (Union Mills) and LaCrosse, which play Wednesday night for the Sectional 51 title. The winner of that game will host Triton in next Tuesday’s regional.
“We just have to take the game as it comes, and ask anybody here and they all would feel that way,” said Triton head coach Steve McBride, who has coached Triton to all three of its sectional titles. “Pretty much all year, we have been able to put the ball in play. Today we put the ball in play just about every inning. We just have to execute and tonight we did that. I was really happy with that.”
Berger was 3-for-3 with two runs scored while the Jennings’ sisters, Sellers, Allyson Brown and Zoee Stephan all had two hits.
For Triton’s ace in the circle, as well as Brown behind the plate and Jenae Kreft, the feeling was bittersweet walking off Keyser Field for the final time as seniors. But to play another day, Jennings will take it.
“One of the assistant coaches told me this would be the last time you ever pitch on this field, which is a little sad, but I’ve got a lot of good memories here, and pitching in a regional next week will be fun,” Jennings said. “Just keep moving on. I’m excited to see how far we can go in this tournament.”
