Prep Tourney Time Rolls On
It was a very busy day for area prep athletic teams Saturday as state tournament action rolled on.
The highlight of the day came at the girls tennis regional at LaPorte.
A trio of outstanding area players earned a ticket to the State Finals in the individual portion of the state tournament series.
Fairfield’s stellar sophomore Emily Mast dominated two foes at No. 1 singles to advance to State for the second straight season. Mast won 6-0, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-1 to improve to 22-0 on the season.
The NorthWood Panthers will also be represented at State as its No. 1 doubles team won Saturday. The duo of Kennedy Walter and Tori Schwartz won their match 7-5, 7-5 after receiving a first-round bye. The Panther pair are now 19-3 this season.
The trio will advance to State set for June 13-14 at Park Tudor High School in Indianapolis.
The Fairfield boys golf sectional was a close on as Northridge ended past conference foe NorthWood 313-314 for the team title. Will Erekson led the champion Raiders with a round of 73 at the Black Squirrel Golf Club in Goshen.
Braydon Glaser was low man for the Panthers with a 74. John Stack of Fairfield earned medalist honors with a 70 as the host Falcons earned third place and the final regional qualifying spot with a team total of 321.
Northridge, NorthWood and Fairfield advance to the Warsaw Regional this Thursday at the Stonehenge Golf Club.
The NorthWood baseball team saw its season end for the second straight year at the Class 3-A Bellmont Regional. The Panthers committed five errors in lost 6-3 to Yorktown in a semifinal game.
Losing pitcher Vincent Miranda allowed no earned runs for the Panthers, who won the Whitko Sectional title. Miranda, along with Hunter Lane and Chad Sellers each had two hits for NorthWood, which finishes at 21-6.
Nathan Phillips slugged a three-run homer and winning pitcher Jake Preston had two hits for Yorktown (17-12).
Both Concord and Penn lost in semifinal baseball action at the Class 4-A LaPorte Regional.
Stephen Pinarski had a double and a run for the Minutemen, who beat Warsaw 2-1 in the title game of the Elkhart Memorial Sectional. Concord finishes its season at 15-16.
Hobart took advantage of Penn’s defense to knock off the Kingsmen 8-3. Penn finishes at 27-5.
The Penn softball team came up short in dropping a 4-3 final to Hamilton Southeastern in a semifinal game of the Class 4-A Lafayette Harrison Semistate.
The No. 3 Kingsmen, who scored three times in the final inning, had three errors in the loss. Mackenzie Joecken had a two-run single for Penn, which beat Concord in the regional. The Kingsmen finish at 36-5.
Huntington North knocked off No. 1 Crown Point 2-0 in the other semifinal game at Harrison.
