Milford Council Approves Plaque For Lions
During its monthly meeting Monday, the Milford Town Council unanimously approved purchasing a commemorative plaque to present to the Milford Lions Club in honor of the local service organization’s 70th anniversary. The local service organization received its charter June 20, 1944, and will be formally recognized during next month’s council meeting.
Representing the Lions Club, Patricia Gall debriefed the council on the recently completed Milford Fest, calling it a strong success and reporting no major incidents. She expressed appreciation to all who assisted in making it a success, including the street, police and fire departments.
Gall also noted the Lions Club recently presented a plaque to the Milford Street Department for all of its hard work and support over the years. Members of the department recently were provided a dinner hosted by the club.
During departmental reports, it was noted the fire department’s rib eye steak sandwich sale during Milford Fest was a success and a sellout. Fitting new masks for members of the fire department also has been successful.
Representing the park department, Justin Yoder requested the pay for the seasonal lifeguards at the beach on Waubee Lake be set at $9.50 per hour for returning employee Patrick Lee and $8.50 per hour for new hire Caleb Dingledein. Yoder also updated the council on the park’s landscaping project scheduled to begin sometime this summer.
Town marshal Rich Miotto informed the council the police department provided free identification kits to more than 100 children during Milford Fest. The kits included fingerprinting along with DNA and hair samples, which would assist authorities in scenarios that might require that information.
Utility commissioner Randy Veach said Beer and Slabaugh Inc. was awarded the contract for the ditch cleaning and maintenance project on Old SR 15 between East CR 1300 North and East Syracuse Street. The accepted bid was $5,980. Veach also informed the council his department accepted a letter of resignation from Mike Clark and they are actively seeking to fill his position. Veach informed the council his department has mowed the lawns of four properties in compliance with a town ordinance concerning yard maintenance, and the property owners would be appropriately billed for the work.
Town clerk Joellen Free reminded the council dates needed to be set for budget workshops as required by the state. The council agreed to meet for the workshops at 6 p.m. June 23 and 24.
During the public forum, Milford resident Matt Carter addressed the council regarding concerns raised at a previous meeting concerning the physical condition of his property. Carter asked the council for feedback regarding the improvement work he has done thus far. Council President Robert Cockburn told Carter the property “looks better, but still needs improvement.” Carter agreed to continue his cleaning and maintenance of the property.
The council is scheduled to meet in executive session at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The next regular meeting of the council will be at 7 p.m. July 14 at Milford Town Hall.
