Warsaw Details Market Street Reconstruction Project
Last friday Warsaw Mayor Joe Thallemer was notified that the City of Warsaw was awarded $1.76 million dollars of Federal Highway Administration Highway funds for East Market Street reconstruction. The project will be administered by the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT).
The entire East Market Street Project will run from Argonne Road to Hickory Street. It will be split into two separate projects. The federal phase of the project will be from Bronson Street to Hickory Street. It will be funded by the recently awarded federal funds. The local phase of the project will be from Argonne Road to just east of Bronson Street. It will be funded by local shares of gasoline tax money and donations.
Both phases of the project will incorporate the same improvements. The road will be widened 5 feet to accommodate on-street parking. Six foot pedestrian sidewalks will be constructed along the entire route on the north side of Market Street. A 10 foot bike/pedestrian path will be constructed along the south side of Market Street connecting Krebs Trailhead Park and the Cultural Trail in Winona Lake to Downtown Warsaw. This bike/pedestrian trail will be partially funded by local donations. East Market Street will be completely resurfaced. Needed stormwater lines repairs will be also be made and overseen by the Stormwater Utility.
The local phase of the project has begun with preliminary engineering. The project will be bid this fall with some utility relocation and stormwater repairs beginning. Construction on the local phase will then begin in the Spring of 2015 and is hoped to be completed by the fall of 2015.
Public meetings will be held for public review and to address details of the plan.
The federal phase of the project has begun with the awarding of $1,769,440 of federal funds for the $2,211,800 project. The 20 percent local match will be the difference of $442,360.
Further details of the project, funding and timelines will be forthcoming as planning progresses.
“We are very excited to have secured federal funds for this project,” said Mayor Joe Thallemer. “Road funding dollars are very competitive and our staff is to be commended for their success in procuring this award. Along with our current Husky Trail project, the Market Street project represents a great opportunity to improve these two very vital transportation corridors in our city.”
