Furnivall Set For All-Star Action
WARSAW – Gabe Furnivall had a senior year to remember.
The two-sport WCHS star athlete will get one final chance to add to his memories come Friday night.
Furnivall will look to try and help the North All-Star football team to a win over their South counterparts in the Grange Insurance North-South All-Star game at North Central High School in Indianapolis.
Furnivall earned All-State honors last fall after a stellar senior season for coach Phil Jensen’s senior-laden squad. The Tiger defensive back, who is listed as a linebacker for the All-Star game, had 62 tackles, including 10 for loss. He also added two interceptions and a pair of sacks.
Furnivall helped lead the Tigers to a 7-4 overall mark and an appearance in the Class 6-A sectional title game. Warsaw also posted a 5-2 mark to tie for second place honors in the Northern Lakes Conference. Furnivall was honored as an All-NLC selection for the second time.
Furnivall, who will play football at St. Joseph’s College, capped his senior season with an outstanding track season. He helped lead the Tigers to conference, sectional and regional championships. Furnivall then placed eighth in the 4 X 100 relay, ninth in the 4 X 400 relay and 16th in the 400 at the IHSAA State Finals in June.
The North All-Star squad will be coached by Tim Dawson of Concord. Dawson is 176-107 in his 25 seasons in charge of the Minutemen, including a 10-3 mark last fall that ended with a loss in the Class 5-A semi state game. Concord also went 6-1 to win another NLC championship.
The North coaching staff will also include Sam Vaughan of Concord.
Area players on the North roster include center Cody Spurgeon of Jimtown, offensive lineman Hunter Schuman of Glenn, tight end Chad Swain of New Prairie, receiver Adam Glanders of Concord, receiver Denton Gillis of South Bend St. Joseph, fullback Michael Hartman of Plymouth, defensive tackle Mike McQueen of Concord, linebacker Aaron Hancock of Penn, linebacker Tyler Katschke of Winamac and free safety Daigien Morgan of South Bend Riley.
The North-South game kicks off at 7 p.m. Friday night. The South, which has won the last three games, leads the series by a 26-21 count.
