Yet Another Dangerous Task In Sight [VIDEO]
SEATTLE – Tommy Danger is at it again, and still with good intentions.
Continuing to fight for a cure for cystic fibrosis, Tommy Locklin, aka Tommy Danger, is headed to his second mountain as part of the More Than Just Mountains campaign. The initiative, which takes Danger’s group of hikers up to seven summits on seven continents, is now headed to Russia.
The group will leave Seattle next week and head for Moscow, then catch a plane to the base of Mt. Elbrus, located in southwest Russia. It wouldn’t be a Tommy Danger adventure without some type of caveat, right? Mt. Elbrus is located just north of Georgia, which has been an area of tension between the two nations in recent years. Russia is also currently embroiled in controversy after the downing of a Malaysian Airlines plane by Russian separatists in Ukraine last week.
“It’s a little hostile but we want the view from the top of Europe and be able to raise more funds for CF,” Danger said Tuesday morning while traveling to Seattle.
Danger’s group completed its first summit climb eight months ago in Africa when Danger, Mark Nolan and John Burkett scaled the 19,341-foot Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Since then, the More Than Just Me organization – which houses the Mountains campaign – has picked up over 10,000 followers on Facebook and received its official 501(c)3 designation to become an officially recognized not-for-profit organization.
Danger isn’t new to the extreme sports lifestyle as part of his feverish fundraising mindset.
In September of 2012, Danger set out and later completed in April of 2013 a run across the United States from Seattle to Daytona Beach, Fla., to raise money for CF. Danger completed the 3,200-mile journey on foot in all weather conditions, but also made stops along the way that made the difference.
“I’m lucky to be able to do what I do, but people with CF can’t do basic things in life they should be able to do,” Danger said following his epic journey last April. “I fight for them.”
Before leaving for Russia, the Mountains group will scale Mt. Rainier in Washington state as practice for the 18,510-foot summit of Mt. Elbrus. Danger noted Elbrus is far more treacherous than Kilimanjaro, which only adds to the appetite to take it on.
“It’s truly exciting because this mountain is a different animal that hosts crazy weather and avalanches out of nowhere,” Danger said Tuesday, hoping to reach the summit by Aug. 2. “We have been training and practicing our safety and rescue routine just in case the mountain gets angry with us.
“It’s all about the weather but until then we are super stoked about completing the second of seven summits and seeing another beautiful country.”
Danger, who is originally from Millersburg and a Wawasee High School graduate, added if the trip allows the time, they plan to visit an orphanage to grow the latest MTJM project, tabbed More Than Just Smiles.
