Jane E. Smith
Jane E. Smith, 73, of Chapman Lake, Warsaw, Ind., passed away at 10:40 a.m. Monday, Aug. 4, 2014, in her residence.
She was born June 6, 1941, in St. Louis, Mo., to Albert and Lillian (Fischer) Hampe. She graduated from the Woerner School in 1952 and Cleveland High School, both in St. Louis. She attended Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, graduating in the class of 1963 with a degree in physical education. While attending Miami, she was member of Alpha Omicron Pi serving as chapter president in 1961/1962.
On June 22, 1963, she was united in marriage to Peter Smith and celebrated 51 years of marriage this past June.
Jane was director of Women’s Physical Education at Oakwood High School, Dayton, Ohio, in 1964/1965 and the served as secretary in the guidance department from 1985 to 1990 and as girl’s varsity tennis coach from 1985 to 1990.
Her memberships included the Junior League, a women’s philanthropic organization, of Chicago, Ill., and Dayton, Ohio; member of the Woman’s Board of the Children’s Medical Center, Dayton; member of the board of directors of Grace Village Retirement Community, Winona Lake, Ind.; member of Tippecanoe Lake Country Club and Venice Golf and Tennis Club, Venice, Fla., where she pursued her love of tennis and golf. In addition, she was a member of St. Anne’s Episcopal Church, Warsaw, Ind., and Church of the Good Shepherd, Venice, Fla.
Her life was devoted to being a wonderful friend to many, as a sister, as a wife and mother and grandmother.
She is survived by her husband: Pete, Warsaw; a daughter: Julie (Chad) Smith Cannon, Dayton, Ohio; a son: Scott (Amy) Smith, Chicago, Ill.; a brother: Richard (Heide) Hampe, St. Louis; and five grandchildren: Ben, Emily and Jack Cannon and Ella and Jackson Smith.
Visitation hours are from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8, at St. Anne’s Episcopal Church, Warsaw. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, with the Reverend Corinne Hodges as the Celebrant. Ennichment will be in St. Anne’s Columbarium.
