Wawasee Sports Wrap – Aug. 19
Wawasee continued its flawless non-conference slate with a pair of wins Tuesday against visiting Mishawaka Marian and West Noble. A pair of 41s from Mikala Mawhorter and Elizabeth Jackson led a blitz by Wawasee, scoring a 174 to best Marian’s 196 and West Noble’s 218 in girls golf.
Aubrey Schmeltz survived a six-putt on the third hole to still card a 44 and the duo of Kylee Rostochak and Kamryn Foy both posted 48s to round out Wawasee’s output at Maxwelton Golf Club. The win puts Wawasee at 8-0 on the season heading into this weekend’s test at the Rochester Invite.
West Noble were paced by a 51 from Paige Shearer and two 53s by Haley Teel and Bailey Kruger. Marian’s scores were not reported.
“We played well tonight,” said Wawasee head coach Steve Coverstone. “It could have been better. We had two four-putts and a six-putt.”
Warriors Top Warriors
In the annual opening pitch war between the Warriors, Westview’s side was more potent Tuesday evening in Topeka. Four goals in the first 40 minutes were more than enough for the Westview Warriors to cruise to a 5-0 result over the visiting Wawasee Warriors.
In a contest a year ago that saw Wawasee stun the perennial 1-A power Westview with a 2-2 tie in Syracuse, Westview atoned in a big way with its opening win this year.
Lucas Hunter started a blitz for Westview in the 19th minute, notching his first of two goals, the second coming just a minute later. In the 22nd minute, Buchanon Carpenter began his hat trick, also reaching paydirt in the 39th and 50th minutes. Jacob Berkey and Zac Carmack added assists on the Carpenter goals.
Chandler Aspy made just one save for the clean sheet while Wawasee’s Korey Knafel made six stops.
“You always have to start somewhere,” started Wawasee head coach Jordan Sharp. “Westview exposed our back line and we patched it up. Lesson learned. We played good soccer, possessed the ball well and looked bright offensively. Lots of positives to take away.”
The Westview JV earned its first win with a 1-0 result against Wawasee.
Wawasee (0-1) will face another tall test Saturday in hosting Northern Lakes Conference power Concord.
