Wawasee Sports Wrap – Aug. 23
Ladies Take JV Invite
For the third consecutive year the Wawasee junior varsity team took the top spot in its own invitational.
The ladies started their day by coming back after losing the opening game against West Noble 25-17. Wawasee took the last two games 25-17, 15-8.
South Bend Washington stood no chance against Wawasee as the Warriors swept the Panthers 25-18, 25-18. Lakeland downed the host school 25-24 and 25-11 in the day’s final match.
Wawasee claimed its crown in the pool play tourney by way of a tiebreaker thanks to the head-to-head win over West Noble, who also finished 2-1.
Skylar Janda had quite the day for the JV team leading the Warriors with 12 aces,11 kills and blocks. Janda also added 14 digs. Kayleigh Rhodes led Wawasee with 24 digs.
The varsity squad spent the day at the Elwood Invite looking to defend its 2013 title. Wawasee didn’t fully attain full stock, settling at 2-2, but made some strides in picking up its first two wins of the season.
The Lady Warriors beat Lewis Cass in three and Tipton in two while falling to Mississinewa in three and Danville in three.
Tournament leaders for Wawasee were Addison Ayres with 16 kills, Aly Anderson with 29 digs and eight aces, and Alli Ousley with 60 assists and 4.5 blocks.
“Still climbing,” said Wawasee head coach Jeff Phillips, whose club moves to 2-4 this season. “One match at a time. We played some of our best volleyball today, but just couldn’t sustain that level.”
Golfers Impressive At Rochester
Among a strong group of contenders at the Rochester Girls Golf Invitational, Wawasee showed an impressive third with a 360. Champion Penn tallied a 341 led by medalist Cassidy Jurkaites’ 75 while Culver Academy was runner up with a 355. NorthWood were fourth at 362 and host Rochester landed fifth at 365 in the 17-team field.
Tippecanoe Valley finished at 508 and Whitko 529.
Among the leaders were Linnzie Richner of NorthWood at 82, Elizabeth Jackson of Wawasee at 83, Mikala Mawhorter of Wawasee at 84, Rachel Beebe of NorthWood at 90 and Summer Stillson of NorthWood at 92.
Warriors Open With Shutout
After a very long night in South Whitley, Whitko and Wawasee returned to the football field Saturday, this time in Syracuse, for the JV football game.
In a strong defensive effort, Wawasee shut down Whitko to the tune of a 13-0 victory in the first game for both clubs.
Riley Pierson returned a fumble for a touchdown, Cole VanLue and Zac McKee both had interceptions and the Warriors forced the Wildcats into five total turnovers.
Noah Wadkins added a 25-yard touchdown run for Wawasee.
Not A Good Day For Lady Warrior Soccer
The Wawasee girls soccer team was back in action on Saturday afternoon but struggled against a superior Westview squad at home.
The visiting Warriors scored five goals in each half to claim a 10-0 throttling of Wawasee. Westview found itself up 4-0 in the first seven minutes of the game. An own goal by Wawasee did not help matters.
Starting keeper Nicole Streby went down with a shoulder injury in the second half, leaving Wawasee too shorthanded for a junior varsity contest. Wawasee did muster six shots on goal against the superior Warriors.
