Jayne Ann Allen
Jayne Ann Allen, 81, of Hartford City, Ind., passed away Thursday, Aug. 28, 2014, at Heritage Pointe in Warren, Ind.
She was born in Hartford City on Oct. 24, 1932, to Robert A. ‘Bob’ Hughes and Martha Elizabeth (Newbauer) Hughes. Jayne graduated from Hartford City High School in 1950. She received her bachelor of science degree in medical technology and then earned two master’s degrees from Ball State University. She was a well known prominent citizen in her community.
She spent many years in the Dayton, Ohio area after graduation, where she taught middle school science and returned to Hartford City in 1969. She retired from Blackford High School after 23 years of dedicated service. She summered for many years on Barbee Lake. She obtained her real estate brokers license and sold lake property for Pier 13 Realty for over twenty years. Jayne was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Psi Iota Xi Sorority, Phi Beta Phi Sorority at Ball State University and North Webster Kiwanis. She was passionate about the environment and animal welfare and volunteered at North Webster Humane Society. She loved to travel especially to the Caribbean and Europe. An avid card player, she would play any game anytime and especially loved bridge, where she was a member of several local bridge clubs. She also loved piano music, with Rag Time being one of her favorites.
She is survived by daughter: Leslie A. Allen-Watters, Hartford City; twin sons: Dann M. Allen, Hartford City; Richard H. Allen, Montrose, Colo.; granddaughters: Kari Watters (Steven Greathouse) and Kristin Watters (Adam M. Smith); great-grandchildren: Kaden Greathouse and Logan Greathouse; sister-in-law: Carolyn (Brose) Hughes, Hartford City; nephew: Tracy (Jean) Hughes, Hartford City; great-niece: Lydia Hughes; her beloved cat: Sammie.
She is preceded in death by her parents and brother: George R. Hughes.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, at Keplinger Funeral Home, 509 N. High St. Hartford City, and from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3, at Grace United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3, at Grace United Methodist Church, 312 W. Washington St., Hartford.
