Wildcats Whip Squires
NORTH MANCHESTER – The Whitko football team thrives on running the pigskin.
The Wildcats were at their best Friday night in rushing roughshod over host Manchester for a big Three Rivers Conference win.
Whitko piled up 374 yards on the ground in stomping the Squires 42-7.
Tanner Hughes did most of the damage for Whitko as the Wildcats won for the second straight week. Hughes toted the ball 28 times for 192 yards and scored on runs of nine, 38 and two yards in the rout.
Whitko out gained the Squires 382-142 in total yards to run its record to 2-2 overall and 2-0 in the TRC.
Quarterback Garrett Elder had 13 carries for 92 yards for the Wildcats, who shared the TRC title in 2013.
Trace Killian had a big game for the winners with a pair of touchdown runs on just four carries on the night.
Whitko, which beat Manchester 46-24 a year ago, forced the Squires into five turnovers in the contest. The Wildcats had three miscues of their own.
The Wildcats defense, which pitched a shutout last week in a 7-0 win over Southwood, also got into the scoring act. The final touchdown of the night came from Zach Snep on a 60-yard interception return.
Leading the way for Whitko defensively were the trio of Zach Baughn, Snep and Cole Kessie.
Whitko (2-2, 2-0) hosts Wabash and Manchester (2-2, 1-1) plays at North Miami in TRC games next Friday night.
