South Shore Rolls Past Bone City [VIDEO]
WARSAW – The Bone Yard was packed Saturday night as the South Shore Roller Girls rolled in for a roller derby matchup with the Bone City Rollers.
The Roller Girls, equipped with speedy jammers and a lot of muscle in the middle, overpowered Bone City 239-100.
Bone City literally limped into the matchup with South Shore, fielding just 10 active skaters to a variety of injuries and rookie training still in play for some new recruits. During the bout, injuries and illness took its toll on a handful of active skaters. The Roller Girls didn’t offer much pity.
Exploding from the gate, South Shore rang up four huge point grabs from Spookie Smackhouse and Tekilla Shot and played airtight defense on potential jams from Bone City’s Ford T-BoneHer and Sneak A. Kat.
The physical play from South Shore wore down the Rollers, who also lost to the Roller Girls 228-111 back on Aug. 16.
Bone City are 2-4 in its inaugural season, and Saturday night’s action is the last scheduled match of the year and only the second home bout, the first coming Sept. 6 in a win against Dire Skates. The proceeds from the bout went to the Kosciusko County Animal Welfare League, which Roxy Runaway stated is an area foundation near and dear to the team’s heart.
“We all love animals, who doesn’t?” stated Runaway. “We support animals, especially if they can be rescued and be given to good homes. We think there are a lot of people in our area that would benefit from a pet, and the Welfare League is just one place among many to find a good, new friend.”
The Bone City Rollers have utilized philanthropy as a major tool in its existence. Organizations such as Heartline Pregnancy Center, Grace Village and the AWL have benefitted from Roller donations, not just in cash, but in time.
“We love our Warsaw community, and we love to give back and help,” Righteous Vendetta said. “We have done over 300 hours of community service up through today. We give our time and our talents, and just do anything that we can.”
The Rollers, looking ahead to 2015, are looking to get a bout scheduled in January, which will allow time to prep several new recruits. The team roster is up to 17 skaters all told, to which Vendetta feels will only grow with time.
“All you really need are skates, a bottle of water and the will to work,” Vendetta stated. “We’ll use the next two months to get some more training in, and we are always looking to take in new skaters.”
