Here are some upcoming events at the Nappanee Public Library.
Nappanee Center Celebrates New Weaver Aerospace Exhibit
It seems very apropos that the new exhibit housed in the Nappanee Center is rooted in the inspiration one remarkable young man found in reading. The exhibit is now part of the permanent Evelyn Lehman Culp Heritage Collection, managed by the Nappanee Public Library, and features items from the life and work of aeronautical engineer, Lee Weaver.
A Nappanee native, Weaver, loved the Buck Rodgers adventures as a boy in the 50’s and, from a young age, was determined to help put men in space.
He attained that goal through many accomplishments, beginning with earning a degree in aeronautic engineering from Purdue and later working for NASA, starting his own aerospace company, and taking on contract work with global aerospace companies. Projects included involvement in the Lunar Rover, Sky Lab, Hubble Telescope and International Space Station.
Weaver passed away in 2001, and his family donated many items from his life’s work to the ELCHC between 2013 and 2014, including a mock-up space capsule restored by Nappanee’s Challenger Door and installed in a newly-remodeled room at the Nappanee Center.
A dedication ceremony and celebration for the opening of the Lee Weaver exhibit will be held at the Nappanee Center located at 302 W. Market St. Nappanee, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13.
Visitors will enjoy a presentation on Weaver’s life, a ribbon cutting, a special straw rocket project for children by ETHOS Science Center, and Rocket Science ice cream. The public is invited to attend.
