Wildcats Defeat Lancers
MARION, Ind. – In a clash of the top two teams in the Crossroads League, No. 20 Indiana Wesleyan came out on top 3-1 over the Grace College volleyball team on Saturday.
The Lady Lancers (24-8, 13-4 CL) struggled to slow down the Wildcats’ offense, allowing the hosts to hit at a .194 percentage for the match.
Grace found itself in a 2-0 hole after losing the first two sets 25-20 and 26-24. In the second set Grace scored the first four points and stayed in front for the majority of the game. But the Lady Lancers squandered a late 22-18 lead, allowing the Wildcats (28-7, 17-2 CL) to bounce back for the win.
The third set was Grace’s strongest defensive effort. The Wildcats were stifled to nine kills as Grace won 25-15.
In the fourth and final set, Grace seemed on the brink of forcing a tiebreaker. Back-to-back kills from Calah Krusesparked Grace midway into the set, and the Lady Lancers forged ahead 22-18 after an ace by Kaitlin Kerrigan. Grace was serving for the set at 24-22, but IWU rallied to send the game into extra points. The Wildcats held off another set point after a kill from Kruse, scoring three straight points to win 27-25.
For the match, Ellie Harp produced the rare triple-double with 37 assists, 10 kills and 11 digs. Calah Kruse finished with 12 kills and 12 digs, and Kaitlin Kerrigan added 12 kills and 11 digs.
Grace Woolsey notched 6 kills, 2 solo blocks and 2 block assists, Tori Bontrager had four kills and four service aces, and Hannah Clemmons had a team-high 13 digs.
The Lady Lancers wrap up the regular season on Wednesday at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center against Goshen at 7 p.m. The match will be Senior Night to honor Kruse, Harp and Clemmons.
