Grace Pummels Crimson Wave
WINONA LAKE – Grace’s women’s basketball picked up its fifth straight win to open the season with a 92-39 victory over Calumet St. Joseph’s.
The Lady Lancers blasted the Crimson Wave (1-4) by a 51-18 margin in the second half to roll to a 5-0 start to the 2014-15 season.
Five players scored in double figures for Grace, and 12 Lady Lancers scored overall. Allison Kauffman’s 20 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals led the way for Grace, and Sarah Feasby added 13 points and seven rebounds off the bench.
Grace started slowly to open up the game, but the Lady Lancers would grab control for good midway into the period. Grace held a slight 16-15 lead with 12 minutes remaining in the half, but the rest of the period belonged to the hosts.
The Lady Lancers exploded with a 22-3 run over nearly a nine-minute span. Grace’s defense limited Calumet to just six points over the final 12 minutes of the half, earning a 41-21 advantage at halftime.
Feasby played a big role off the bench in the first half, tallying 11 points in 10 minutes. Kauffman also produced nine points before halftime.
In the second half, Grace’s superior play was even more evident. The Lady Lancers’ offense hummed along at a frenetic pace, hitting 61 percent of their shots from the floor and 11-of-12 from the foul line. The Crimson Wave, conversely, made just 6-of-32 of their field goals (19 percent) over the final 20 minutes.
Grace held a staggering 52-20 advantage in rebounding for the game. The Lady Lancers also nabbed 13 steals and passed out 18 assists. Calumet was outscored 41-5 in bench points, 28-12 in points in the paint and 17-5 in second-chance points.
Lindsey Schaefer produced 10 points on 4-of-4 shooting and eight rebounds, and Micah Pollard had 10 points. Kelsie Peterson finished with 10 points, 3 assists and 2 steals, and Darian Patton chipped in seven points and four assists.
Chloe Pridgen led all players with 12 rebounds in 10 minutes, and Jenna Kieper added five points.
The Lady Lancers will put their undefeated record on the line this weekend with a pair of games in Illinois. Grace will take on St. Francis (Ill.) on Friday and Olivet Nazarene on Saturday.
