We just came through Thanksgiving and are now heading into Christmas and New Years very quickly. Christmas is a very special time of year for me and my family. Over the next couple of weeks I want to go a little bit different direction and focus on the things that truly make life special and worth living.
We have entered the time of year when we will now be experiencing many warm fuzzies. When I taste the fresh homemade warm vanilla pudding during the holidays I have a warm fuzzy. When I hold my wife’s hand while we walk through the snow as it crunches beneath our feet, I have a warm fuzzy. When our family watches It’s A Wonderful Life, Holiday Inn and White Christmas, I have a warm fuzzy.
What is a warm fuzzy you ask? A warm fuzzy is simply this – in an instant, no matter what is going on around us, there is a touch, a smell, a sound, a taste, or a sight of something which takes us back to a joyful moment in our past, or we create a new joyful life-ling memory. It is something pure, wonderful and peaceful – a heartwarming feeling. It brings a smile to our face. The memory may be from 50 years ago, but the feeling is still so strong today.
When my beautiful wife makes warm vanilla pudding it takes me back to a time when my mom would do the same thing for me during the holidays. When I take my wife’s hand and walk during this time of year it takes me back to the first time I held her hand and how my heart raced. By the way, my heart still races when we hold hands! When I hear the unique voice of Jimmy Stewart in It’s A Wonderful Life it takes me back to all the times we have done this as a family.
I realize this time of year can be very difficult for some people. If you are one of those people who struggle during this time of year I hope you can hear a favorite song, taste a special dessert or smell a holiday smell which takes you back to or creates a wonderful memory to bring you joy.
Never discount the power of warm fuzzies and the feelings they bring. This is especially true when we face difficult times. However, we don’t need to be experiencing a tough time to let the power of something that touches us deeply put a smile on our face and peace in our heart, so we can face our future with joy and peace.
Do something this week which brings back some warm fuzzies! Maybe you can make an old family recipe. Light a scented candle. Watch a favorite movie and eat some popcorn as a family. Drive by the house you grew up in and tell your children some great stories. What are some of your warm fuzzies?
