The Art of Crochet
By LAURIE VOSS

This winter I decided to revisit my long-lost hobby of crocheting. I learned to crochet from my mother and from illustrated books she had.
My mother always had a project going, her favorite being a pineapple design tablecloth. Luckily, I obtained an identical tablecloth at an auction and made it my own.
Two things recently happened that re-energized my hobby again. The first was visiting the Hooked on Crochet Club at the Warsaw Community Public Library. I took photographs of their projects, and even taught a class on making rag rugs.
The second was Facebook. I found photos a friend was posting to the Facebook group Crochet Addicts. From there this love sparked anew, and the hooks came out of hiding.
For Christmas this year I created seven ponchos, and several crocheted dresses for an American Girl doll. I now have many crochet patterns I want to try! My go-to gift for weddings, baby showers, etc., has become the beautiful rag rugs crocheted from bed sheets.
I have even begun to store my many crochet hooks the same way my mother did; in a green mason jar with baled lid.
Are you interested in learning this relaxing hobby? The library has many books on the subject. We have books that will teach you step by step, from how to learn a beginning chain, to the most difficult stitches. We also have many books with patterns of every design imaginable for clothing, bags, animal clothing, and much, much more.
You can also attend the Hooked on Crochet classes which meet from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., the third Tuesday of each month. If you know how to crochet bring the project you’re working on and sit and chat. If you would like to learn to crochet bring a hook and some yarn, someone will be happy to get you started.
Stop in at the Warsaw Community Public Library for more information or assistance in locating some great crochet books and patterns.
