Indiana Couple Married 76 Years Die Hours Apart
An Indiana couple who had been married for 76 years died just four hours apart in December, but rather than mourn the loss their family is celebrating their lives and the love they had for each other.
John and Ruby Cassady were married Thanksgiving day, 1938. The marriage brought them two children, four grandchildren and so much happiness.
“She was parking along the sidewalk and he was coming down and she saw him and went right over the curb. He said ‘Watch it lady.’ That’s how they met,” shared daughter Bonnie Garrett.
“My parents were a lot of fun. When I look back at my childhood, it’s just fun. They would sing silly songs,” she recalls.
On Dec. 19, Bonnie got a phone call from the nursing home where her parents were living, telling her that her mom had passed away. She had been at the hospital with her husband, who was having bypass surgery. When she was finally able to get away four hours later, she was on her way to the nursing home when her phone rang again, this time telling her that her father had died, too.
Ruby was 95 and John was 99.
“The fact that they died so close together I think is symbolic of their devotion together,” Bonnie’s husband Dick remarked.
The couple were buried together Jan. 9, on what would have been John’s 100th birthday, leaving a legacy of love and devotion.
