TVSC Hosts Second Akron Elementary Project Information Session
Thursday night was the second of two information sessions regarding the plans to renovate the facilities at Akron Elementary school (see related). Unlike the first meeting, Thursday evening’s meeting was held off-site at Mentone Elementary School.
Like the first meeting, the meeting at Mentone Elementary featured presentations by Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation Superintendent Brett Boggs, Akron Elementary School Principal Chrissy Mills and Victor Landfair of The Skillman Corporation. The crowd was approximately half the size of the one that gathered at Akron Elementary just two nights prior. Mills expressed her pleasure in the turnout due to the fact that the project would take place down the road in Akron, and stated, “I was excited when I saw all the people coming in the doors earlier.”
There was likely a correlation between the smaller crowd and the decreased number of public comments from Tuesday to Thursday. After Boggs opened up the meeting to the public, only one individual offered up a question. The individual, who asked to remain anonymous, asked, “Does the current Akron building meet code?” The question was handled by Landfair, who explained “Codes are updated every year. So the best answer is no, but that does not mean it is unsafe to have children inside. If you update a building though, you are obligated to bring anything that you touch up to code.”
Since the meeting was off-site, an immediate tour of the current Akron facilities was unavailable, but individuals wishing to see the school, as well as hear about the planned upgrades, are encouraged to contact the Akron Elementary front office.
