Indianapolis Number 9 On List Of Murder Capitols
Indianapolis has made it onto a dubious top ten list for 2014, an article on the Daily Beast has ranked it as the number nine city in the US for number of murders. The state capitol had 135 killings last year. Indianapolis police report that is an 8 percent increase from the year before and a 26 percent increase over the last decade.
While Indianapolis saw a jump in murders, eight of the country’s most violent cities including Chicago actually saw their numbers drop from the previous year. Houston was the only other city on the list that saw an increase in murders from 2013 to 2014.
“If you live in Indianapolis and you’re not a drug dealer, you don’t have a past crime, you do not have a past gun crime, you do not have a past felony crime, the chances of you being a victim of a violet crime, whether it’s a homicide or a shooting, are still pretty low,” stated public safety director Troy Riggs, citing that 92 percent of the city’s homicide suspects have a criminal past.
Data collected for the rankings came from census reports, the FBI and police departments. Here are the top ten cities with the number of murders reported:
1. Chicago – 407
2. New York – 328
3. Detroit – 304
4. Los Angeles – 259
5. Philadelphia – 248
6. Houston – 239
7. Baltimore – 217
8. New Orleans – 150
9. Indianapolis – 135
10. Dallas – 111
