Homestead Dominates Depleted Warsaw Squad
WARSAW – Warsaw’s gymnastics team was just happy to be home. Outmanned from the start against a strong Homestead team, Warsaw was more interested in competing on its home equipment Tuesday night in a 101.65-66.9 final.
The Tigers’ first home meet of the season was light in bodies as only four total gymnasts in black and orange participated. Warsaw did have two gymnasts competing in all-around, but getting people on the equipment will be Warsaw head coach Megan Kammerer’s aim in the coming meets.
Jazzmine Brown cracked the top five in scoring for Warsaw in three of the four events. Brown was fourth on vault at 8.4 and bars at 7.475 while taking fifth on floor at 8.425. Brown’s 6.05 on beam gave the senior a 30.35 all-around score.
Katie Richard’s highest mark was on beam with a 6.45, sixth-place figure. Richard, also a senior, posted 7.8 on vault, 6.4 on bars and 7.025 on floor to complete her evening’s all-around number at 27.7.
Junior Nadiya Burritt struggled on bars in her only varsity run of the night at 3.35 and freshman Libby Jenkins had a 5.5 on beam in her only varsity total.
“Jazzmine has done very well, and she a lot of club experience so it’s transitioned well for her,” Kammerer said. “She is showing a lot of skill and should do well as the year goes on.”
A very stout Homestead lineup posted some big scores in its workload Tuesday. Taylor Ross led the way on vault with a 9.0 and also had a 9.0 on bars to pace all competitors. Ross again led the field with her floor score of 8.75 and added a 7.7 on beam to field a 34.45 all-around score, best of show. Katelynn Chaffee, the final competitor on beam, saved the best for last with her 8.3 top score. Chaffee also had a fine floor score with an 8.65.
Warsaw’s lineup was light a pair of seniors in Kristen Holloway and Shannon Winslow, with Winslow the glaring omission as her senior year could be in jeopardy with a knee issue. Holloway’s absence was not divulged by Kammerer. Growing pains and nagging pains have already crept in, forcing the depleted roster to adjust quickly.
“We’ve just thrown the younger girls in so they have a chance to have the ability to compete with the older girls,” Kammerer stated. “Since we did lose Shannon, we’ve done as well as we can. But we will have all of our freshmen competing this weekend.”
Warsaw will compete again Saturday in a triangular with East Noble and host Plymouth. Warsaw opened its season at East Noble Jan. 13.
