First Northern Indiana Seed Swap
By KELLY HECKAMAN
Extension Educator, Purdue Extension Kosciusko County
Interested in trying some new seeds for 2015? Have seeds that you saved from last year’s garden or flowers? Do you want to learn how to save seeds? Then, you will want to plan on attending the first Northern Indiana Seed Swap on Saturday, Jan. 31, at the Purdue Extension Office located at 202 W. Main St., Warsaw.
Doors open at 9 a.m. for registration until 10 a.m. The swap and educational presentations conclude at 12 p.m. Door prizes will also be given out at the conclusion of the swap.
The Seed Swap is free and open to the public who are interested in sharing seeds. This is a great opportunity to exchange seeds and try something new for 2015 without making a purchase.
If you have saved seed from last season, please bring only heirloom or open pollinated seed. Commercial seed is acceptable as long as it is no more than one year old. Any type of seeds are welcome, including flowers, vegetables, annuals, perennials, treated or untreated. All seed must be in envelopes and clearly labeled.
Educational presentations will also be offered during the swap. The first session will cover an introduction on saving seeds of all types. Pat Knott will share how to save seeds from heirloom tomato plants and fruits. Then there will be an open sharing session for all participants to ask questions and share what worked and what didn’t in 2014.
If you have any questions about the seed swap, you may email [email protected] If you need directions to the Extension Office, contact us at (574) 372-2340.
The Northern Indiana Seed Swap is being sponsored by Circa Farms, Purdue Extension and master gardeners.
