Bus Drivers Asked To Return Jobless Benefits
Hundreds of school bus drivers and head start teachers from across Indiana are being asked to pay back jobless benefits they’d been receiving during the summer months for the past several years.
According to Fox News, many teachers and bus drivers had filed for and received unemployment benefits while school was out in the past. A law change in 2011 discontinued the eligibility for those benefits, but people continued to file and the state continued to pay.
The Indiana Department of Workforce Development now wants that money back. The agency stated the drivers and teachers were no longer allowed to receive the benefits because there was a reasonable assurance they would go back to work. It also says the 2011 law change made it clear the unemployment benefits were no longer valid.
Drivers are asking the IDWD to waive fees for repayment of the funds. Lawmakers are also looking into reversing the law change.
