News and events this week:
Lost Communities Program At Nappanee Center
Before Nappanee was organized, five smaller towns made their mark on the surrounding area. Hastings, Hepton, Gravelton, Locke and Stumptown have disappeared entirely or are slowly blending into the countryside. General stores, dance halls, businesses and other landmarks are long gone, but local historians are hoping memories remain.
Evelyn Lehman Culp Heritage Collection Manager, Martha Weirich, will talk about each of these towns at a special oral history event at the Nappanee Center from 10 a.m. until noon Saturday, March 14. Attendants are encouraged to bring along any stories, artifacts or photos they may have that can help piece together the puzzles of these communities. Light refreshments will be served.
The Heritage Collection is maintained by the Nappanee Public Library and housed within the Nappanee Center at 302 W. Market Street. Hours are 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. For more information, call (574) 773-7812, or go to www.nappaneelibrary.org.
Kid’s Crafts
Make a free St. Patrick’s Day beaded shamrock at the Nappanee Public Library from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Saturday, March 14. Kids will have the chance to drop in for this special activity in the children’s departmet. Kid’s craft day is held on the second Saturday of each month in conjunction with Nappanee’s city-wide Second Saturday events.
Tours
Did you know you could use a sewing machine and serger or check out a portable die cut machine at the Nappanee Public Library? How about craft patterns or jigsaw puzzles? There are more than books at the Library. New cardholders and those interested in learning more about the Library are invited to a guided tour of the Nappanee Public Library at 7 p.m. Monday, March 16.
In addition to discovering where to find current bestsellers, a favorite cookbook, or the daily news, participants will be introduced to many special services. These include the Library’s makerspace, online catalog, eMedia, computers and copiers for use in the library; framed original art, CD’s, DVD’s and many other materials for loan.
The library is located at 157 N. Main St., Nappanee, and holds the tour the third Monday of every month and also by appointment.
Book Club
Read along with the Cover to Cover Book Club at the Nappanee Public Library. The club will meet from 6:30 until 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 17, to discuss “The Presidents Club: Inside the World’s Most Exclusive Fraternity” by Nancy Gibbs and Michael Duffy. The book examines presidential power within the context of U.S. history and the ongoing relationships presidents and ex-presidents formed with one another.
For more information or to reserve a copy of the book, call (574) 773-7919, or go to www.nappaneelibrary.org. The Cover to Cover Book Club meets at the library on the third Tuesday of each month.
