Syracuse BZA Approves Two Cases
There were only two cases on the Syracuse Board of Zoning Appeals agenda Thursday night and both were approved.
Syracuse Pentecostal Church’s petition for a variance to allow two uses on one tract of ground (a residence and a church) was approved. The property is located at 605 N. Harrison St.
The owner is Dan Slone, Milford. The house, once the parsonage, may be rented now since it was rezoned from public use to residential use Tuesday during a Syracuse Town Council meeting. The church “functions as a church for now,” said Slone, but the congregation has not met since the fall. In the event Slone wants to turn the church into apartments, he will need to have another separate hearing.
Douglas and Carolyn Anderson’s petition for an exception was approved. The property is located at 107 E. Pickwick Drive. The couple own Wawasee Boat Company. They want to allow motorized vehicles (boats and water craft) on a commercial tract of ground. The couple want to put a new sign on the property and replace an old sign. The LED message display will be 7 feet 10 inches long by 2 feet 9 inches wide. The entire sign will be 18 feet tall (at its tallest point), and 14 feet wide (at its widest point), smaller than the old sign. There will be no on-site sales or staff, but the sign will direct traffic to the couple’s business.
The exception will allow the Andersons to display a few boats and pontoons, on occasion, and the sign will be used “to catch people’s attention,” said the couple’s attorney, Steve Snyder. They will “display boats and have a sign; that’s it,” said Snyder.
The election of officers took place. Larry Coplen is chairman, Ben Plikerd is secretary, and Larry Martindale is vice chairman.
Syracuse BZA meets again at 6 p.m. April 16, at Syracuse Town Hall.
