Toddler’s Death Results In Charges For Elkhart County Daycare Provider
Jackie Rolston of New Paris is now facing charges for the death of 19-month-old Kirk Coleman after the child died while under her watch.
According to a probable cause affidavit filed in Elkhart Superior Court Friday, Rolston informed investigators that the young child had acted “fine all morning with no problems, walking, playing, watching television and interaction with her and other children.”
Then around the middle of the day, she said she heard the little boy “making a choking noise and observed him struggling to breathe.” That’s when she said she cleared his mouth, began back blows and rescue breaths and called for an ambulance.
It was later determined, however, that the child had suffered multiple head and eye injuries from blunt-force trauma.
The affidavit filed in court states, “…investigators have discovered no evidence that any other person had access to, or care or control of (Kirk) during the time frame in which the injuries [to him] and resulting symptoms could have occurred other than Rolston.”
Rolston has a history of abuse. She pleaded guilty to a neglect charge in 2008 and a judge sentenced her to an 18 month suspended sentence and probation after a family took action against her when their son returned home from daycare with marks on his neck, later determined to be the result of physical abuse.
State documents indicate that Rolston has never been an official daycare provider in Indiana in regards to licensing.
