‘Doubt’ Brings Doubt
It’s a production about doubt and it’s on Amish Acres second stage in the Lock Meeting House weekends through April 12.
“Doubt” is a play, set in 1964 in the Bronx, N.Y. It is about a Catholic school principal who has her doubts about Father Flynn’s intentions and convinces a young nun to doubt, too.
Jeremy Littlejohn is Flynn. He’s the parish priest. Littlejohn, long an Amish Acres favorite, turns in his usual perfect performance.
Another Amish Acres favorite, Amber Burgess, is Sister Aloysius, the principal of St. Nicholas school. She runs her school with an iron hand and doubts everything the father does. As usual, her performance is brilliant.
Niclole Tempkins is the young teacher, Sister James, who is easily swayed. Tempkins turns in an excellent performance as she tries to do what is right for her students.
Myesh-Tiara is Mrs. Muller. She is great as the mother of the school’s only black student. Her son is in trouble but she really only wants him to stay in school until June so he can go on to high school and then college. The production opens with Father Flynn giving a Sunday morning sermon on the topic of doubt.
The next scene features the two nuns with Sister Aloysius talking about the problems Sister James has in her class. Sister Aloysius expresses concern for one of Sister James’ students. Donald Muller is the only black student in school and Flynn seems to have taken an interest in him.
Before Sister James leaves the room both sisters have their doubt about the father.
The principal calls Flynn to her office on the pretense of discussing the Christmas program. She becomes upset when he suggests a secular song be added. Flynn and Sister James like the idea of adding “Frosty The Snowman,” but Sister Aloysius objects to a snowman coming to life.
Eventually the true reason for the meeting comes to light. Father Flynn objects to the sister’s tone. He feels his being confronted is wrong.
Donald had been caught with alcohol on his breath and then it is learned he had been drinking the altar wine. Father Flynn declares he was trying to help the youngster and told him he could remain an altar boy as long as no one else found out. Now the boy would have to be told he could no longer be an altar boy.
As the final scenes take place Father Flynn talks to the younger sister. He talks about Jesus’ love and the fact she should use the love that is in her heart. He tells her he has done nothing wrong.
The principal calls Mrs. Mueller to talk about Donald. The two end up yelling at each other. The mother is only concerned for her son. His father beats him and if he is kicked out of school his father will kill him.
Flynn meets with Sister Aloysius alone in her office. They argue. She keeps blaming him and wants him to leave. He insists he has not done anything wrong. In the end he leaves.
In the final scene Sister Aloysius admits to Sister James she lied. She breaks down as she once again has doubts.
“Doubt” is directed by Joe Ford. Hats off to him for a job well done.
