Frantz Forced To Sit All-Star Event
MISHAWAKA – There’s no doubt that the Red team could have used the skills of Jordyn Frantz Monday night.
Unfortunately for both parties, the NorthWood girls basketball star had to spend this All-Star game in an unfamiliar spot.
Frantz was forced to sit and watch as her Red team lost 99-90 to the Gray squad in the courth annual McDonald’s Michiana All-Star Basketball Game held in the Wiekamp Center on the Bethel College campus.
Frantz, who was chosen for the Indiana All-Star team earlier this month, was sidelined due to a knee strain.
“I hate missing games,” said Frantz following the contest. “It was very tough to sit on the bench tonight.”
Frantz said that she strained a tendon in her right knee a couple of weeks ago in a weight training class.
Frantz, who has signed to play at Saint Louis University, led the Panthers to a 19-6 overall record and a 7-0 mark to win the Northern Lakes Conference title. She finished second in school history in career points and is the fifth NorthWood player to earn an All-Star spot.
“It’s awesome to be picked for the All-Star team,” said Frantz. “I didn’t really think about it until last year when I made the Junior All-Stars. This was kind of my last goal before moving on from high school.”
The Gray team, led by Camille Coleman, never trailed in the contest. The Gray raced to a 10-2 lead to open the game as Penn’s Casey Morton and Coleman, who played at South Bend Washington, hit back-to-back treys to open the game.
The Gray squad led 52-37 at halftime by hitting 21-46 shots from the field, including 7-20 from distance. Coleman had 13 of her game-high 30 points in the opening half. The Red team shot just 13-45 in the first half, including 3-16 from deep.
The Red team, which was led by Tiara Murphy, pulled within 73-67 with 9:26 left in the game. The Gray squad answered with a 12-3 run to bump their lead back to 85-70 and take control of the contest.
Murphy, a lightning quick guard who is bound for Purdue, paced the Red team with 27 points. The former South Bend Washington star, who was also selected for the Indiana All-Star team, hit 11-28 shots and also had eight rebounds.
Coleman drained 14-31 shots to net her game-high 30 points for the winners. Michelle Weaver (south Bend St. Joseph) had 19 points for the Gray team. Morton finished with 14 points, while Madeline Raster (St. Joseph) had 11 points and 14 rebounds and Lauren Grewe (Mishawaka) chipped in with 10 points.
Taylor Wesley (South Bend Washington) had 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Red team. Kyler Columbia (John Glenn) scored 12 points and Danielle Davis (South Bend Adams) 10 for the Red team.
Alexsis Miller of Elkhart Memorial chipped in with nine points and seven rebounds for the Red squad. Taylor Miller, a Northridge senior, had five points and three assists.
The Gray squad hit 42-95 from the field for the game, including 10-33 from deep. The Red team finished 33-93 from the field, including 9-33 from long range.
