New Statue Honoring Aviation Hero At Indianapolis Airport
The Indianapolis International Airport unveiled a new statue honoring local aviation pioneer Colonel Harvey Weir Cook April 2.
Col. Cook founded Indiana’s first principal airport in 1931, which would later become IND. He was considered a pioneer in commercial and military aviation.
The seven foot tall bronze statue stands on a pedestal made from Indiana limestone. It is displayed at the entrance of Weir Cook Memorial Terminal. The statue was created by Bill Wolfe, a local artist.
“Col. H. Weir Cook’s statue serves as a historical reminder of the achievements of this remarkable Indiana aviation pioneer and his connections to both commercial and military flight in Indiana,” stated a release from the Military and Veterans Coalition of Indiana. “The Indianapolis Airport Authority is proud to honor this Hoosier hero.”
