North Webster, Milford Easter Egg Hunts Draw Hundreds
At 9 a.m. sharp, a swarm of more than 200 youngsters swept through the North Webster baseball fields and in less than five minutes scooped up every last treasure in Saturday’s Easter egg hunt.
The North Webster Lions Club hard boiled and colored 45 dozen eggs and added another 15 dozen plastic eggs that could be traded in for cash. They strewed those 720 prizes throughout the outfields on the four diamonds. And in scant minutes, they were all gone.
“It was a clean sweep,” said Dan Thystrup, a Lions member for 27 years who helped coordinate the event. “It took them less time to gather the eggs than it did to put the eggs out there.”
At the Community Center, the Lakeland Kiwanis sponsored a community breakfast. Participants could eat all they wanted for a free-will donation. The menu included pancakes, sausage and eggs.
Members of the Wawasee High School Key Club served up orange juice, milk and coffee. The breakfast was open from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and by 9:45 a.m. more than 200 people had been served.
Meanwhile, the gymnasium in the Community Center was flush with fun activities. Children played ring toss, corn hole and other games for treats; entered a coloring contest; had balloon animals made for them; played in a bounce house; and had their photos taken with the Easter bunny.
Several children collect eggs Saturday during the Milford Easter egg hunt.
At the “Go!” signal, precisely at 11 a.m. Saturday, more than 200 children raced onto the soccer field at Milford School to gather up plastic Easter eggs and turn them in for cash.
The Easter egg hunt was sponsored by the Milford Kiwanis Club. Clark Jones, past club president and 26-year member, estimated the club laid out about 800 eggs. “This is one of our biggest turnouts,” he said. “We have been growing a little every year.” About 20 of the club’s 35 members helped with the event.
“We want to make sure the kids get their eggs and we’ll put some more out after others have cashed them in.” All the eggs were collected by the kids in about three minutes.
